Sailing School Passage Plan

GULF ISLANDS CRUISE - 5 Day Basic / Intermediate Cruise

PRIMARY DESTINATIONS - Clam Bay, Snug Cove, Montague Hbr., Bedwell Hbr., Maple Bay, Vancouver.

DAY 1-

- 0900

- Stow personal gear and supplies

-Students will check the condition of and report the location of safety gear/emergency equipment.

- Confirm destination - plan course - establish ETA

- Obtain marine weather report - check for appropriate charts and additional publications.

- Review head operation

- Discuss galley/stove precautions - fuels

- Review fire fighting procedures & burn prevention and treatment.

- Check sails, rigging, ground tackle - secure dinghy -prepare to get underway.

- 1100

- Depart for Clam Bay 

- SIMULATE 'MAYDAY' - 'PAN PAN' - 'SECURITY'

- Throughout the cruise students will demonstrate diligent application of "Rules of the Road"

- Proceed to Clam Bay by agreed route and with a rotation of crew candidates

demonstrating sail trim at various points of sail as well as steady and careful helming.

- Winds allowing, establish a compass course and establish 3 bearing fixes

- 1500

- Review considerations for entering an unfamiliar harbour.

- Enter selected harbour/destination.

- Determine depth above/below chart datum.

- Take fix - maintain plot.

- Take soundings using electronic means, if practicable verify with manual method.

- Review considerations for selecting an anchorage.

- Moor in appropriate location.

- Secure vessel.

- Debrief the day's activities.

- 1600

- Discuss/plan following day. Demonstrate knots.

- 1700

- "Junk Food hour".

- 1900

- Dinner

 

DAY 2 -

- 0900

- Light breakfast/weather check

- Perform daily maintenance checks - engine and other equipment.

- Discuss - evaluate various types of cabin heaters.-

- 1000

- Throughout the cruise students will demonstrate diligent application of "Rules of the Road"

- Proceed to Bedwell Hbr. by agreed route and with a rotation of crew candidates demonstrating sail trim at various points of sail as well as steady and careful helming.

- Winds allowing, establish a compass course and establish 3 bearing fixes

- 1500

- Review considerations for entering an unfamiliar harbour.

- Enter selected harbour/destination.

- Sandwiches and hot water/coffee for later/lunch - cleanup.

- Perform daily maintenance checks - engine and other equipment.

- Demonstrate use of heaving line.

- Confirm course - establish passage plan.

- 1130

- Cast off.

- Proceed to next destination.

- Rotate helm and crew positions with crew practicing skills.

- Watch for Killer Whales or Dolphins .

- 1600

- secure vessel.

- Debrief the day's activities.

- Discuss/plan following day.

- 1700

- "junk food hour".

- 1900

- Dinner.

 

DAY 4 -

- 0900

- Light breakfast/weather check

- Perform daily maintenance checks - engine and other equipment.

- Confirm course - establish passage plan.

- Depart for next destination

- Rotating crew positions, continue to demonstrate sailing and navigation skills.

- 1600

- Anchor and secure vessel.

- Debrief - review any concerns.

- 1630

- Discussion period.

- 1900

- Pub meal or dinner onboard.

 

DAY 5-

- 0900

- Light breakfast/weather check

- Perform daily maintenance checks - engine and other equipment.

- Confirm course - establish passage plan.

- Depart for Vancouver.

- Rotating crew positions, continue to demonstrate sailing and navigation skills.

 

- 1500

- Arrive Vancouver

- Debrief events of the cruise.

- Vessel clean-up and removal of personal gear.
