Note:

The endorsements required to qualify for each certificate are listed below.

Workbooks for each certificate are provided by ISPA for each of the certificates.

Each module in the workbooks must be completed and retained by students to achieve certification.

Competent Crew Certificate

The holder is certified as being competent to act as crew while under the command of a Skipper on a sailboat or a powerboat.

Requirements

Module 1 "Seamanship Sail 1" Endorsement

Module 3 Emergency Procedures Endorsement

 

Day Skipper Certificate /Operator License

This certificate is generally recognized as the minimum requirement to charter a vessel for Daysailing, subject to the following criteria:

The holder is certified as the Skipper, to be responsible for the safety of his/her vessel and crew, for Daysailing only, in daylight only, sailing in local waters requiring only basic navigational skills, in moderate wind and sea conditions.

Prerequisites Have achieved the level of Competent Crew

Coastal Navigator Certificate

See details of the standard laid out under Coastal Navigator Certificate.

[This certificate is required to complete the Coastal Skipper Certificate. The Coastal Navigator practical can be completed prior to or be part of the Coastal Skipper Certificate].

 

Coastal Skipper Certificate

This certificate is generally recognized as the minimum requirement to charter cruising vessels subject to the following criteria:

The holder is certified as the Skipper, to be responsible for the safety of his/her vessel and crew, while cruising in a vessel in coastal waters, where navigational hazards exist, in daylight with good visibility with wind speeds up to 25 knots.

Prerequisites Have achieved the level of Day Skipper/Operator

Requirements Have achieved the level of Coastal Navigator, also

Module 1 "Seamanship Sail 3" and "Cruising Spinnaker" Endorsements OR "Seamanship Power 3" Endorsement

Module 2 Collision Avoidance 2 Endorsement

Module 3 Weather 2 - ‘Coastal Meteorology’ Endorsement

Module 4 Boat Systems Endorsement

Module 5 Health and Safety Endorsement

Module 6 Auxiliary Engines Endorsement One of Group A, B, or C.

Advanced Navigator Ocean Certificate

Prerequisites Have achieved the level of Coastal Navigator

Module 1 Collision Avoidance

Module 2 Electronic Navigation including Radar

Module 3 Passage Planning Coastal

Module 4 Passage Practical

The holder is certified to navigate a vessel in any weather, in reduced visibility or at night with a qualified Skipper on board.

This certificate has to be completed before the Advanced Skipper Certificate can be awarded.

 

Advanced Skipper Ocean Certificate

The holder is certified as the Skipper, to be responsible for the safety of his/her vessel and crew, while cruising in coastal waters, where navigational hazards exist, in any conditions, at any time day or night.

Prerequisites Have achieved the level of Coastal Skipper

Yachtmaster Ocean Award

Awarded on application to International Sail and Power Association, to any person who can produce evidence of the completion of all of the above certificates and endorsements and has logged a minimum of 3000 coastal miles (inside the 50 mile limit) as the skipper of the vessel. The application must be made through and endorsed by an ISPA Certified School and an Instructor Evaluator.

Offshore Crew

Requirements for certification

Must complete the ISPA Day Skipper Certificate prior to the offshore trip.

Must be able to exhibit all of the knowledge and skills included in the ISPA Day Skipper Certificate applicable in an offshore environment.

Must complete a minimum of 500 offshore miles non stop as crew under a Offshore Instructor

Offshore Mate

Requirements for certification

Must complete the ISPA Coastal Skipper Certificate prior to the offshore trip.

Must be able to exhibit all of the knowledge and skills included in the ISPA Coastal Skipper Certificate applicable in an offshore environment.

Must complete a minimum of 500 offshore miles non stop as Mate under a under Offshore Instructor

Offshore Watch Captain

Requirements for certification

Must complete the ISPA Advanced Skipper Ocean Certificate including ISPA Advanced Navigator Ocean prior to the offshore trip.

Must be able to exhibit all of the knowledge and skills included in the Advanced Skipper Ocean Certificate applicable in an offshore environment

Must complete a minimum of 1500 offshore miles non-stop as a Watch Captain under an Offshore Instructor.

Offshore Navigator (Celestial) Certificate

The holder is certified to navigate a sailboat across the ocean out of the sight of land without the aid of electronic instruments.

This is a requirement for Offshore Skipper Certificate.

To be certified as an Offshore Navigator, all of the requirements for Coastal Navigator, Advanced Navigator Ocean and the standard as laid out under Offshore Navigator Certificate must be achieved.

Offshore Skipper Certificate

The holder is certified as the skipper and navigator, to be responsible for the safety of his/her vessel and crew, while sailing in coastal waters and on the open ocean (50 miles from the nearest landfall).

Prerequisites no exceptions................;

Offshore Navigator Certificate (Celestial Navigation)

Have achieved the Yachtmaster Ocean Award

Requirements for certification

Must be assessed by an offshore instructor during a minimum 1500 mile offshore passage while acting as an Offshore Skipper

Module 1 Seamanship 5 Offshore Endorsement

Module 2 Weather 4 Endorsement

Module 3 Heavy Weather Sailing Endorsement

Module 4 Passage Planning 2 Offshore Endorsement
