Advanced Navigator Ocean Certificate

The holder is certified to navigate a vessel in any weather, in reduced visibility or at night with a qualified Skipper on board. This certificate has to be completed before the Advanced Skipper Ocean can be awarded.

Requirements for Certification

To be certified as an Advanced Navigator Ocean, all of the requirements for Coastal Navigator and the following must be attained:

Module 1 Electronic navigation including Radar

Module 2 Collision Avoidance 3

Module 3 Passage Planning Coastal

Module 4 Passage Practical

Electronic Navigation Including Radar Endorsement

Describe what factors and conditions can cause the degrading of signals and the function of electronic navigational systems. ÿ

Demonstrate the ability to operate Radar, including adjusting for the effects of weather/sea state; identification of land features; plotting a fix and the use of radar for collision avoidance. ÿ

Demonstrate the use of an automatic pilot ÿ

Demonstrate navigation and waypoint planning using Loran C or GPS ÿ

List the problems that electronic navigation systems can present while in use ÿ

List the items on the training vessel that will cause deviation to the ship's compass ÿ

 

Collision Avoidance 3 Endorsement

Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the International Collision Regulations Rules ÿ

Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the International Buoyage system, specifically at night ÿ

Stand a rotational navigation watch for a minimum of 24 hours ÿ

 

 

Passage Planning Coastal Endorsement

Plan a 24 hour or 100 mile non-stop passage demonstrating the following:

The selection of appropriate charts ÿ

The correct use of different scale charts ÿ

Laying a course allowing for set and drift to avoid any obstacles ÿ

The calculation of set and drift between two points ÿ

Correct timing for entry and exit of at least one pass ÿ

Pre determine clearing and safety bearings ÿ

The use of transits, stern and lead marks ÿ

Passage Practical Endorsement

Follow a pre-prepared passage plan. ÿ

Either

utilize the plan from the Passage Planning endorsement, "Plan a 24 hour or 100 mile non stop passage"

Or

use the route planned for the on the water section of the Advanced Skipper Ocean Certificate.
