Our plans and philosophy for the 2008 Vic-Maui race

This will be our 5th Maui race and we are looking forward to a fantastic time!

We will be participating with expectation of finishing first in our division. We have previously finished 3rd and 2nd, the only reason to do this race again is to win.  Our goal should be to finish in 12 days. It is however, paramount that the trip be a safe, enjoyable adventure for all.

As in previous years we look forward to having a crew with various levels of experience and abilities.  We are looking for people with previous racing experience, people who have a wide range of skills and people who are enjoyable to be with.
We would like to find 2 primary go-fast drivers with extensive racing background, whose main task will be to sail the boat on regular watches while providing coaching for their crew members. We are then looking for 5 people who want to experience ocean racing and have some sailing/racing experience.  2 of these people will be our secondary drivers.   We would like to find someone who may have limited racing / sailing experience whose primary task will be to provision the boat, and be able to have meals available for the watches to prepare.  It would be a great asset if this person could also look after any medical emergencies that may arise. These crew members will stand regular watch -- trimming and driving and would have a regular "sailing" position for an "all hands".

All crew will have regular sailing position and will be on hand for starts, sail changes and emergencies.

I would like to think that we can offer a programme that is well organized, well financed, and has produced good results.

We start with a competitive boat that has been developed over several years. We have added 10 or so new sails to the boat along with other gear & electronics that leave very little to be desired. The bottom has been taken down to bare, faired and epoxied.  The boat now has a cutter rig for greater flexibility and power.

We want to push the boat a bit harder than in previous years, but more importantly, be more consistent in our boat speed. We have found out that getting the big numbers 17+kts. is not the way to win --- we have to be pointed in the right direction and NOT let the boat speed drop below 8.7 kts. If we can maintain 8.7 kts. we can get to Maui in 12 days and win.

In addition, a big difference between our programme and others is that no one is rail meat -- everyone drives and trims. Everyone's opinion is listened to. You are part of a team.

For us, the most important thing for is to find the best group of people that can work together safely and have a great time. This is the key to participating to the best of our ability and doing well.
