Straits and Saltspring depart from Vancouver Rowing Club in Stanley Park
Swiftsure and Vic-Maui depart from the Inner Harbour in Victoria. For Swiftsure, we will be taking the boat to Victoria on Wed the 21st, leaving VRC around noon, we will be staying at Montague Hbr. and then heading to Victoria in the morning.
For Club races and VARC races we meet at Rowing Club at 9:00
Regarding places to stay --- In Victoria we stay at Paul's Motor Inn --- very cost effective but a bit of a walk from the dock -- we will have a Van.
In Maui, we stay at the Lahaina Shores. Again a fair walk to the marina but we have a car to run around and do the provisioning.
You are welcome to stay onboard the boat in Victoria and in Lahaina. You cannot stay aboard in Vancouver.
If you have questions about accommodations in Maui or activities, contact June at June@sailcraft.com
PARTY TIME
For those new to all of this, there are PARTIES!!!!!
For Straits, there is a dinner Thursday night at WVYC followed by door prizes.
For Saltspring -- forget it we will be sailing all night.
Swiftsure --- now things are getting serious --- there is the BARGE!!! -- tickets to the party will be provided.
AND THEN THERE IS THE VIC-MAUI
Things get started when the boat arrives in Victoria which will probably be Wed. -- mostly visiting other boats and meeting new people.
My best guess is that the Dock Party -- complete with women wearing coconuts and grass skirts, a couple of live bands, free Mai Tais and beer as well as dinner, is on the Friday night.
IN MAUI ---- there is a dock party for EVERY BOAT when it finishes -- DAY OR NIGHT! The crew members of boats that have previously finished are welcome. Lots of food and drink. Both Race Crew and Yachtmaster Crew + guests are welcome.
On the 12th, there is an awards banquet both Race Crew and Yachtmaster Crew + guests are welcome.
In addition to the above, there will be Crew dinners prior to Swiftsure and Maui + a BBQ at our place sometime in June.
More serious items ---
ALL Race Crew and Yachtmaster Crew MUST have a current Medical exam and Dental exam. You are going to have to sign a waver saying that you are in good enough health to do the trip.
I would seriously advise that everyone starts an exercise programme NOW. Even if it is just brisk walking for 45min. Even I have been going to the Gym twice a week and dragging the dog around the countryside for the last 4 weeks.
Unfortunately, virtually everyone aboard is going to get seasick. The important thing is to develop the ability to work through it. Almost every year 1 or 2 boats drop out because they run out of crew -- everyone is sick.
The best thing to do is to get used to working with your medication. I want EVERYONE to consult their doctor about a suitable medication and use it on our practices --- the best (but still not 100% effective) is the patch -- it has side effects and you should get used to it. Straits will be the first test.
