We are looking for fun, enthusiastic people with all levels of experience to join us in 2011
Our plans and philosophy for the race
The guiding philosophy for Turicum and her crew during the Van Isle 2011 is as follows:
We want to be as a competitive as possible without having a shore based support team. We want to sail as hard as we can with expectation of doing well against other cruising boats. It is however, paramount that the trip be a safe, fun adventure for all.
All crew will have regular sailing positions and will be on hand for starts, sail changes and emergencies but is expected that everyone will have shifts on the helm. A big difference between our programme and others is that no one is rail meat -- everyone drives and trims. Everyone's opinion is listened to. You are part of a team. There is going to be very little galley work -- we will be eating most of our evening meals at the BBQs put on by the local towns (at no additional cost to you) and everyone will help out with breakfasts, lunches and snacks. In addition to meals, we supply the required safety gear, and bedding. All you have to bring is your wet weather gear, flashlight, and rigging knife. Hey, we'll even buy the beer!
There may be some venues where there is no BBQ provided and we will have a separate Crew Dinner which will not be part of the crew share. At locations where we are having meals aboard or on overnight legs, those meals will be included.
I would like to think that we can offer a programme that provides a lot of fun, exciting sailing and safe adventure for all.
We start with a competitive boat that has been developed over several years. With new or near new sails added to the boat along with other gear & electronics we leave very little to be desired.
We want to push the boat but, more importantly, be more consistent in our boat speed. We have found out that getting the big numbers 17+kts. is not the way to win --- we have to be pointed in the right direction and to work hard particularly in light air and during sail changes.
We would like everyone to sail with us in VARC races, Southern Straits (Good Friday to Easter Monday), and Swiftsure (Memorial Day).
The Swiftsure race will be the first where we will use our racing sails and equipment. We will be doing the short course to reduce the wear and tear on equipment -- you should plan on having Monday free as it is often hard to get back to the mainland for Monday morning.
If this sounds like a reasonable plan and
if you are interested in becoming part of this programme please
email a sailing resume and a statement of your personal goals as
they apply to the race.
We will try to finalize our main crew (full 360) by March 21
When that is done, we will start looking at bringing additional crew aboard for
the individual legs. Yes, even people with limited experience.
We are basically a sailing school and strongly believe in using every
opportunity to get people on the boat and show them what sailing and racing is
all about.
Several crew have arranged for accommodations ashore in previous years. It makes a nice break to get off the boat and enjoy a hot shower. Reservation should be made early as in some locations space is VERY limited.
Please check back to this page to see how things are progressing and what space
is available.
